10 Pinoy nurses trapped in Tripoli amid gunfire — envoy

The Filipino nurses in a hospital located in the outskirts of Tripoli in Libya are safe for now as troops and rebels exchange gunfire inside the facility.

Philippine Ambassador to Tripoli Elmer Cato said the embassy in Libya received a call from a Filipino nurse on Wednesday evening.

Cato, in a post on social media accounts, related the details of the phone call.

The nurse was quoted as saying, “Sir, pinasukan po kami. Nagpuputukan dito.”

“She was in her unit at the housing compound of the hospital. We could hear sporadic small arms fire just outside her door as we were talking,” Cato said.

“She said there were more than 10 Filipino nurses still there at the compound,” he added.

The nurse sent an audio clip and the gunfire in the recording, Cato said, sounded like it was close to where the caller was positioned.

“It was dangerously close. it was not just small arms fire that we were hearing now but heavy weapons as well. During brief pauses in the exchanges, we could hear voices of armed fighters directing fire. Later she messaged to say the door of her unit swung open following an explosion. The fighting is ongoing.”

Cato said he is in touch with the Filipinos inside the unnamed hospital.

He did not provide details as to the present situation.

But to a query posted by a photojournalist on the same social media post, Cato related that nurses were evacuated weeks ago but there some who opted to stay behind.

“Our dilemma is once fighting starts, they will be trapped and there is no way for us to clme and get them.”

He added that the nurses are safe.

“They are all safe. It’s all quiet there now.”

Cato, meanwhile, also asked for prayers.

“Let us pray for her and all of our nurses who are caught in the middle of the fighting there. Let is all pray for our kababayan in Tripoli. Let us all pray for Libya and the Libyan people,” he said.
