Senate President Tito Sotto stood his ground that he will not allow the Sexual Orientation Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE) equality bill to pass.
The Lesbians, Gay, Bisexuals, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community has been pushing for the bill’s passage more so following the discrimination that transgender woman Gretchen Diez has endured.
“Anti-discrimination on persons pwede, pero focused on gays, which the SOGIE bill is, and religious and academic freedom impeded plus smuggling of same sex marriage? No chance!,” Sotto said in a message to reporters.
President Rodrigo Duterte has expressed support on the SOGIE bill after meeting with Diez in Malacañang on Tuesday.
Duterte is also set to hold a convention for the LGBTQ+ community and sign an executive order to prevent any form of discrimination towards the community.
Diez was on the spotlight after she was barred from using a female restroom at a mall in Quezon City
