BREAKING: Calauan mayor convicted for rape, murder may be set free

DUBAI: Antonio Sanchez, who has been found by the court to have led the abduction and rape of Mary Eileen Sarmenta, a student at the University of the Philippines Los Banos during his term as mayor of Calauan, Laguna in 1993, and consequently handed down seven life sentences, may have to be set free.

This according to Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra who yesterday told reporters the convicted rapist and murderer may get out of Bilibid soon because of a reduced prison term.

The verdict include charges for the abduction and murder of Alan Gomez, Sarmenta’s boyfriend during the same incident.

“Isa sa mga magbe-benefit doon ay si Mayor Sanchez daw, kasi matagal na rin siyang nakulong, pati siya mae-entitle doon sa computation ng good conduct time allowance (GCTA),” Philippine media quoted Guevarra as saying in a phone interview with reporters. (Photo: BusinessMirror)
