Ombudsman dismisses 7 erring BOC workers

SEVEN officials of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) have been ordered dismissed by the Office of the Ombudsman due to various offenses such as gross neglect of duty, grave misconduct, conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service, and serious dishonesty.

The cases filed against the dismissed BOC workers stemmed from accusations either they allegedly facilitated an illegal transhipment from one port to another and/or rice, jewelry and sugar smuggling.

The dismissed BOC workers included Ramon Hernandez, Deputy Collector for Operations of the Manila International Container Port (MICP); Lomonto Macabando, Customs Operations Officer 5; Vanzandt Remonde, Customs Operations Officer 3; Jaybee Raul Cometa, Special Police Assistant Chief, Bureau of Customs MICP; Renly Tiñana, Customs Security Guard 2; Oscar Farin, Special Agent 1, BOC-Port of Zamboanga; and Vicente Gamboa, Customs Operations Officer 3.

Aside from dismissal, perpetual disqualification from public office was also meted against the seven BOC workers.

In case the dismissal orders deemed not enforceable since they have been already relieved, the seven BOC workers would still have to pay a fine equal to one year of their salary as a Customs employee.
