Dubai customs seize Dh25M meth, heroin

Customs inspection officers in Dubai have intercepted an attempt to smuggle almost 260kg of heroin and crystal meth into the country.

Around 251 kilograms of crystal meth and 6.4 kilograms of heroin were found in concealed spare car parts.

The amount of the confiscated illegal drugs is estimated to be at Dh25 million.

The shipment owner of the smuggled drugs hid the contraband at car spare parts, and meticulously placed them in different types and different sizes of spare parts, to make detection more challenging.

But Dubai Customs intelligence and Customs inspectors at at Jebel Ali Customs Centre, near the port, were able to detect the contraband using the Smart Risk Engine system, with a little help from K9 dogs.

The Smart Risk Engine, developed in-house by Dubai Customs using the latest AI applications, recognizes the upcoming risky shipments and creates a profile for different expected risks. The risk engine classified the spare parts shipment as risky.

“We have built a very advanced system to curb these illegal attempts, and this seizure reveals the level of professionalism and skills our staff have,” Yousef Al Hashimi, Director of Jebel Ali Customs Centers Management said.
