An Asian man who issued five cheques for Dh697.000 without having sufficient balance in his bank account pleaded for mercy in a court in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.
The unnamed businessman confessed he issued the cheques for five local contracting companies but said he was hoping to secure the funds on time.
Court was told that all cheques bounced back, prompting the companies to report the issuer to the police, according to the Arabic language daily Al Khaleej.
“He told the judge that he simply could not secure the funds for the cheques when they are due to be encashed,” it said.
“He confessed to the crime and pleaded for mercy by asking the judge to reduce the sentence,” it said, adding that a sentence would be issued on Aug 21.
