Life goes on for OFWs in Hong Kong despite protest activities

Pro-democracy protests continue in the former British colony, particularly the Hong Kong International Airport, but Filipino overseas workers are unfazed and continue to churn out a living to provide for their families in the Philippines.

Several OFWs continue their work even on their day off just so their families can pay “Judith”, as per a report from GMA News.

“Judith” is a monicker of the term ‘due date’ that is related to the due date of payment of phone bills, electricity bills, among others.

“Habang tumataas ‘yung sweldo, tumataas din sa atin kaya ‘di ko rin nafi-feel ‘yung itinataas ng sweldo dito kasi tumataas din ang bilihin sa atin. Kulang pa po. Kailangan ko pang kumita ng extra,” said Catherine Andrada.

Another Filipina domestic helper, who refused to be identified, endures maltreatment by her employer as she is only able to eat leftover food and sleep on the kitchen floor.

But she is determined to work until her contract expires in December just to keep a good record as she hopes to find a better employer someday.
