House of Representatives to pass OFW department bill next month

The House of Representatives assured the public that a bill creating a Department of Overseas Filipino Workers (DOFW) will be passed next month along with other tax reform measures.

Albay Representative and House Ways and Means committee chairperson Joey Salceda said that the OFW department bill is one of the priorities of the Duterte administration.

“Two weeks before we go into plenary on Oct. 5, that bill should be passed already along with other priority revenue measures,” Salceda said.

The OFW bill is proposed by House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano together with Presidential son and Davao Representative Paolo Duterte.

Senator Bong Go filed the same bill at the Senate.

Under the proposed measure, at least 5 government agencies will be streamlined under the OFW department.

Recruitment agencies will strictly be monitored.

“Bawal na ‘yang recruitment diyan sa labas that kind of mechanism of recruiting Filipino workers abroad has been abused and abused and abused. Mga kababayan ko puro biktima, puro kawawa,” Duterte said in a speech last month.
