Remains of 7 family members from ill-fated Guimaras trip now back home in Cebu

Seven dead bodies came home to the Baguio and Jansen families on Thursday evening as walls and cries of grief filled the air inside the multi-purpose gym in Barangay Ermita the moment their living family members came to see the remains of their loved ones.

The cadavers of Jared Janson, Danilyn Baguio, Rommel, Baguio, Dannelle Baguio, Romeo Baguio Sr., Angelina Baguio and Bernardo Janson are all lined up on one side of the gym.

There were 10 of them who left Cebu City. They were on their way to Guimaras Island for a “pamanhikan”, or the Filipino way of formally asking the hand in marriage from her family.

However, only one survived after their boat capsized in the tragedy in Guimaras-Iloilo Strait.

Two cadavers of other family members – Romeo Baguio Jr., the groom-to-be and his three-year-old son Jay Arvien will be transported to Guimaras Island from Iloilo City to be with the bride-to-be and common-law wife Maria Nieves Grandeza. Now, Grandeza will no longer have the chance to exchange “I dos” with the younger Romeo.

The tragic incident leaves both families seeking answers as to what happened to their family members. Like the other fatalities of the tragedy, they want authorities to tell them what really happened.

One of them was Marcialisa, wife of Bernardo Janson who broke down after seeing the casket of his husband and his grandson Jared. She lost consciousness right after crying over the closed casket of Jared.

Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella committed to helping facilitate the burial of the victims. He is also looking into other aids that they can extend to the family.

President Rodrigo Duterte will extend a financial assistance of P350,000 to the bereaved families.
