Manila Mayor Isko Moreno stayed true to his campaign promise on giving Php1,000 monthly allowance to Manila college students.
Moreno signed an order which will take effect in 2020 to ‘good standing’ students of Universidad de Manila and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.
Under the ordinance qualified students refer to “undergraduate students in good standing, of PLM or UDM, who is a resident and registered voter of the City of Manila.”
The Manila government believes the program can help at least 10,000 students in the country’s capital.
The Universidad de Manila administration thanked Moreno because most of their students come from poor families and despite the free college tuition, they are still struggling to make ends meet.
“Malaki ho ang magagawa niyan, lalo na for 8 months, P8,000,” UDM President Ernesto Maceda Jr. told Rappler.
