1,440 men tie the knot in Saudi Arabia’s largest wedding

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has held its largest mass wedding that involved the marriage of 1,440 men and the distribution of gifts worth nearly SR3.5 million ($940,000).

The wedding took place in the Western Red Sea port of Jeddah on Thursday night and was attended by thousands of guests, including Jeddah’s governor Prince Mashaal bin Abdul Aziz.

“It was the biggest mass wedding and one of the largest social events in Saudi Arabia. At the end of the wedding, a draw was held for a furnished apartment and luxury cars for the grooms,” Almowatin newspaper said.

The grooms were also handed “valuable” wedding gifts donated by businessmen and dignitaries, it added.

Saudi Arabia and other Gulf oil producers regularly stage mass weddings in a bid to cut high marriage costs.
