LOOK: Medals created from recycled cellphones for Tokyo Olympics 2020, Paralympics unveiled

One year before the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, the organizing committee has unveiled the Olympic and Paralympic medal designs.

This time, the precious medals for Tokyo 2020 will be completely made out of recycled electronic gadgets as per report of CBS News.

The medals are made from 80,000 tons of gadgets of which 6.21 million are cell phones.

In April 2017, the Tokyo organizing committee launched a two-year “Everyone’s Medal” campaign to collect donated electronic devices from the public.

From the donated electronic devices, the teams were able to extract 32 kg of gold, 3,500 kg of silver and 2,200 kg of bronze to fill the requirement of producing around 5,000 medals.

After two years of gathering and completing the resources needed, the committee finally presented the designs and looks of the aforementioned medals.

Out of 400 professional designers and design students, Junichi Kawanishi’s design was chosen for the Tokyo 2020 medal.

According to the committee, the medals were designed to “resemble rough stones that have been repeatedly polished and now shine brightly, reflecting the athlete’s journey from beginner to Olympic champion,”

The Tokyo Olympic emblem can be seen as the front design of the medals and the back has the Greek goddess of victory.

According to the International Olympic Committee guidelines, every medal design must include the iconic Olympic symbol featuring the five rings, as well as the official name of the game, the Greek goddess of victory Nike and the Panathenaic stadium.

The games for Tokyo Olympics 2020 will begin on July 24, 2020.
