Gold bracelet lands Asian woman in jail

Abu Dhabi: An Asian housemaid, identity and nationality withheld, was locked up a prison in the Capital after she was accused of stealing her female employer’s gold bracelet, a charge she has denied.

During the trial, the prosecutor accused the maid of stealing her employer’s gold bracelet and purse but she denied the charges.

According to Al Khaleej Newspaper, the judge decided to adjourn session at the request of the defense lawyer.

“The court decided to keep the maid in prison and set the next hearing on July 30,” the report said.

According to UAE law, theft made by an employee in the course of his or her employment, and at the place of employment, carries between 5 and 7 years, depending on the gravity of the case.

Minor thefts, however, carries six months up to three years jail term or a fine.

The sentence can also be reduced depending on the case, based on judge’s discretion.
