Baby born with ‘three heads’

Doctors were baffled on Thursday after a mother in India gave birth to a baby girl with three heads.

The bizarre occurrence was first reported by The Sun on Friday and showed photos of the baby with two undeveloped and attached heads at the back of her main head.

Newslions TV in India was the one who got the footage and photos of the baby.

But what really happened to the baby?

According to the report, the two large protrusions that looked like two undeveloped heads are rare birth defects known as encephaloceles.

Encephaloceles, based on the information from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, happens when the neural tube does not close completely during pregnancy.

It usually results to an opening anywhere along the center of the skull from the nose to the back of the neck but most often at the back of the head, at the top of the head, or between the forehead and the nose.

The baby and the mother were later transferred to the District Hospital in Etah where the latter was advised to have her child undergo a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan to determine the medical condition that caused the said abnormality.

Rajesh Thakur, Chief Medical Superintendent of the hospital, said they may perform a surgery to separate the ‘heads’.
