JUST IN: Alan Peter Cayetano elected as House Speaker

Taguig-Pateros Representative Alan Peter Cayetano is the new House Speaker.

Cayetano was elected with 266 votes at the Lower Hosue.

His opponent Manila Representative Bienvenido Abante receives 28 votes.

Cayetano was endorsed by President Rodrigo Duterte to lead the lower house for 15 months. He is set to share his term with Marinduque Representative Lord Allan Velasco.

Buhay Representative Lito Atienza and Magdalo Representative Manuel Cabochan abstained, while Albay 1st District Representative Edcel Lagman registered a “no” vote.

Abante is set to become the minority bloc leader.

Former speakership aspirants Martin Romualdez, Lord Allan Velasco and presidential son Paolo Duterte nominated Cayetano for speaker.

“I nominate a leader who understands local and national governance, who can fearlessly represent the House of Representatives and the Philippines in the international arena,” Paolo said.
