Duterte urges Congress to pass bill establishing Department of OFWs

President Rodrigo Duterte urged lawmakers to pass the bill creating a Department for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

“The signing of the bilateral agreement with Kuwait in 2018 is a testament to my commitment to stop abuses infected on our overseas Filipinos to ensure their welfare, protection and their access to gov’t services,” Duterte said in his 4th State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Duterte earlier said he wants an OFW Department by December.

Senator Bong Go has filed Senate Bill 202 seeking the creation of the said department.

The creation of this department aims to streamline the recruitment processes of migrant workers, among others.

“Apurahin ko yang Department of OFW (overseas Filipino workers),” Duterte said in a separate speech last week.

Duterte also hopes to release a framework on the OFW department by August.
