PH’s Expo 2020 team will not compete, instead highlight Pinoy creativity

DUBAI: The Philippines will not be “competing” with the countries in their pavilion designs at the much-awaited global showcase of achievements and futuristic ambitions that is Dubai Expo 2020.

Instead, Arch. Royal Pineda, overall artistic director for theme development of the Philippines EXPO 2020 Dubai team, the country will “present the nature of the Philippines.”

“We don’t want to compete with any countries out there in presenting an architectural presence [for the Philippine Pavilion],” Pineda said in he first edition of the Philippines Expo 2020 Dubai newsletter.

“Instead,” he said, “we want to be truthful and honest in what we can present with our own design logic and creativity as Filipinos.”

The Philippine pavilion will be inspired by the coral reef or “bang-kó-ta” in ancient Filipino.

“Part of being a modern Filipino is being permeable,” Pineda said. “Permeability will be obvious in the pavilion’s architecture and we aim to express it in everything.”

Meantime, Marian Pastor-Roces, curator and overall content development said visitors will play a vital role and “become a part of the stories to be offered by the Philippines Bangkota Pavilion.”

She said these will be “narrated through digital-driven content, film installations, and other interactive contemporary art forms.”
