Canada offers compensation for passengers who missed their flights

Canada has required its airlines to pay 2,400 Canadian dollars (1,634 euros) to passengers who missed their flights due to overbooking.

The order is part of Canada’s measure to protect airline passengers.

“We have created a world-leading approach to air passenger rights that is clear, consistent, transparent and fair,” the Canadian Transport Minister said in a statement.

The new regulation will take effect next Monday. It will require airlines to pay Can$2,400 if the primary reason for a passenger’s missed flight was due to overbooking.

Airlines will also have to pay up to Can$2,100 for lost or damaged luggage and as well refund baggage fees.

The next set of new airline regulations will be revealed in December which will focus on flight delays, cancellations and passenger safety.

Violators can be penalized and fined of up to Can$25,000 for every incident.
