President Rodrigo Duterte talked to legislators vying for the position of House Speaker that amendments to the Constitution be introduced during his term
Duterte revealed that he discussed the matter with Taguig City Representative Alan Peter Cayetano, Marinduque Representative Lord Allan Velasco and Leyte Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.
“We have to change the Constitution. Whether federal or what not. Sabi ko doon sa tatlo kinausap ko,” the President said.
“Sabi ko, ‘If you want to change the Constitution, do it now. Nandiyan pa ako.’ And I can tell the military, ‘No, no, no. You better’… Kasi ang military mainit na. And I have told you all the corruption sa gobyerno, ang pinakamalaki nandiyan sa itaas,” he added.
Duterte has been vocal about his preference for shifting to a federal form of government as a way to address national economic and power imbalances.
Duterte has approved of the ‘term sharing’ between Cayetano and Velasco, while Romualdez will be the next House Majority Leader.
Duterte made the endorsement after meeting in Malacañang three of the leading contenders in the speakership race.
