Strong quake hits California, fire and damage reported

A strong earthquake, the largest recorded in two decades, struck Southern California on Thursday, causing fires and damage to property

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the 6.4 magnitude quake struck about 113 miles or 182 kilometers northeast of Los Angeles near the city of Ridgecrest at around 1:30 pm EDT (1730 GMT). It was felt as far away as Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Reuters reported.

The quake happened on the Fourth of July, a holiday, and as expected tourists flocked Disneyland California. One patron posted a video on Twitter of chandeliers rocking back and forth in a restaurant inside the park.

CNN reported that Disneyland California shut down their rides temporarily closed their rides for three hours. After inspection, the rides were back up and running.

At least 159 aftershocks of magnitude 2.5 or greater were recorded after the quake, USGS seismologist Robert Graves said.

Ridgecrest Mayor Peggy Breeden declared a state of emergency as the city dealt with fires and broken gas lines, falling objects that hit people as aftershocks continued to be felt.
