An additional 1,177 megawatts (MW) was added recently to the power capacity in Abu Dhabi after the world’s largest single solar project became operational.
The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) made the announcement noting that ‘Noor Abu Dhabi’ will increase the production of renewable energy and reduce the use of natural gas in electricity generation.
A report of Khaleej Times said the project has a capacity that will accommodate the demand of 90,000 people.
The Dh3.2 billion solar plant features over 3.2 million solar panels that were installed in an 8 km2 site.
Mohammad Hassan Al Suwaidi, Chairman of EWEC, sees this as a milestone in achieving UAE’s Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to increase the presence of clean energy.
