DFA warns Pinoys in HK to exercise caution amid mass protests

The Foreign Affairs Department has warned Filipinos in Hong Kong to take precautionary measures   following massive protests that have erupted in some of its major streets over a move to impose extradition.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) asks Filipinos in Hong Kong to exercise extreme caution and vigilance  in light of mass protests in the area.  The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong released an advisory, asking Filipinos there to keep away from demonstration areas, which are generally concentrated outside government central offices, particularly the Legislative Complex, in Admiralty and in Tamar Park,” DFA said in statement.

The Foreign Affairs Department said that consular officials should consider rescheduling transactions unless immediately needed.

“The Consulate General continues to monitor the situation and will provide public advisories from time to time as necessary. It also stands ready to provide assistance if needed,” the statement further added.

Demonstrators said they are against a proposed law that would allow Hong Kong to extradite fugitives to territories where it doesn’t have formal extradition deals, including mainland China, Taiwan and Macau.
