PHL ban on trips to Canada by gov’t employees lifted

The ban imposed on government trips to Canada has been lifted, according to media reports.

The ban was put in place in connection with Canada’s shipment of tons of garbage to the Philippines. The same trash were returned to the North American country last week.

The directive was announced by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea; presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo said it took effect immediately.

Earlier, Medialdea issued a memorandum directing department secretaries and heads of agencies, government-owned and controlled corporations, and government financial institutions to refrain from issuing travel authorities for official trips to Canada.

Panelo explained the memo was issued because of Canada’s failure to meet the May 15 deadline to retrieve the 69 containers of garbage shipped to the country in 2013 and 2014.
