21 prisoners freed as anonymous donors settle their debts worth Dh2 million

DUBAI: In the spirit of the holy month of Ramadan and the Year of Tolerance, some 21 prisoners serving time at Dubai Central Jail for unpaid debts were released after anonymous donors settled their dues, Dubai Police said.

“Dubai Police is keen to sign agreements with charitable institutions and double our humanitarian efforts as part of the Year of Tolerance,” said Brigadier Ali Al Shamali, director of the Dubai Police Correctional and Punitive Establishment Department.

The freed expats were also given airline tickets home, officials said.

Among those freed was an Egyptian national now looking forward to being reunited with his wife and daughter in the Philippines.

The man, whose identity was withheld for privacy reasons, obtained be debt via credit card bills in 1998 which have remained unpaid and accumulated interests for a combined total of Dh50,000.

Officials said the man worked in Dubai backed in the 1990s, met the Filipina overseas worker with whom he had a child with and got separated from. The man returned to Egypt but has made it a point to regularly visit the Filipina and his daughter in the Philippines.

It was in one of these visits when authorities got to him last year at Dubai International Airport for the unpaid debt.
