Filipinos on Monday experienced the first Philippine-made hybrid electric train which offers free rides for 19 days.
In a Facebook post, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development, which monitored the development of the train, said the Philippine National Railways would run it on the Alabang-Biñan route.
“The Philippine National Railways will have to complete 150 hours (approx. 19 days) run time for the train which will run the Alabang-Biñan route as part of its turnover process,” the post read.
The air-conditioned train, whose technology is patterned after that of a Toyota Prius hybrid car, is capable of seating 880 passengers, and was designed and built by DOST engineers and local fabricators.
