18,000 vacancies await jobseekers in Central Visayas on Labor Day

Over 18,000 available jobs, local and overseas, await jobseekers on May 1 as the Department of Labor and Employment Region 7 (DOLE-7) stays on full throttle in its preparations for the 117th Labor Day celebration in the region.

DOLE-7 Director Salome O. Siaton, in her announcement, said employers participating in the four (4) different job fairs simultaneously taking place posted a total of 18,889 vacancies from the initial positions tallied days ago at 11,231.

The significant increase, she said, was credited to additional private recruitment agencies that signified interest to join the Job Fair at SM City Cebu, the main venue of the activities.

For local employment, around 6,898 vacancies will be available for jobseekers with customer care service representatives at more than 2,000 topping the first five (5) commonly in-demand positions that also include sewers, cashiers, sales clerks and registered nurses.

Overseas employment registered around 4,518 needed positions for factory workers followed by skilled workers, nurses, cleaners, and laborers, among others, totaling to 11,991 jobs available.

The director noted the need for nurses both locally and abroad saying, “We found out that of the in-demand jobs reflected, the common skill needed not only here but also outside the country is that of nurses.”

There are 211 nurses needed locally and 3,251 abroad. Countries in need of nurses include the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA); United Arab Emirates (UAE); United Kingdom (UK); Bahrain; and Kuwait. The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration will be facilitating a government-to-government hiring of 1,000 nurses for KSA.

Because of the Build, Build, Build program of the government, Siaton said there are also available jobs falling under the construction industry such as carpenters, scaffolders, heavy truck drivers, and tilers, among others.

This year, the 117th Labor Day celebration in the region will be hosted by the Industry Tripartite Council (ITC) in construction.

She said jobseekers and everyone else looking for employment opportunities should take advantage of the Job Fairs on May 1.

The local and overseas Job Fair at SM City Cebu’s Trade Hall registered 17 establishments for local employment posting 860 vacancies and around 7,658 vacancies needed abroad.

“What makes the conduct of Job Fair at SM City Cebu slightly different from the rest of the job fairs is that it is being patterned after the idea of Trabaho, Negosyo, at Kabuhayan (TNK), whereby jobseekers, who would not be lucky enough to get a job would have an option to go to the Negosyo Center of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to get business counseling, some tips in starting up a business and other services,” explained the official.

DTI’s Negosyo Center will form part of the TNK area along with the Kasambahay Desk of the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB-7). Another component of the Job Fair is the provision of the One-Stop-Shop Services involving TESDA, BIR, PRC, HDMF/PAG-IBIG, PPC, Phil health, SSS, PSA, BI, NBI, POEA, OWWA, NRCO and, DOLE.

The One-Stop-Shop Services located at the Second Floor of SM City Cebu, Government Service Express Center will be offering services to clients from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Apart from the Local and Overseas Job Fair at SM City Cebu, which will run from 10:00 AM up to 5:00 PM, the other three job fairs will start at 8:00 AM and ends at 5:00 PM.

The local Job Fair at Cebu Provincial Capitol tallied 1,970 vacancies from nineteen (19) participating employers. The local and overseas Job Fair at Mandaue City Sports Complex registered 3,600 vacancies from forty (40) employers participating and around 1,500 vacancies needed abroad from five (5) participating private recruitment agencies.

The local and overseas Job Fair at the Main Atrium, Robinson’s Place, Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental posted 468 positions needed locally and 2,833 vacancies needed abroad.

Siaton advised jobseekers to be ready with and bring to the Job Fair Areas the following: Biodata; Picture (2×2); Certificate of Employment if applicable; Diploma/Transcript of Records; and Authenticated Birth Certificate.
