Another Filipino wounded in Tripoli

Another Filipino worker was wounded in Libya after a mortar round fell in their compound near the Tripoli International Airport.

The wounded Filipino was not identified but was only described as a worker of an oil and gas services provider in Qasr bin Ghashir, some 20 km south of central Tripoli.

He is the second Filipino casualty since the eastern-based military launched an attack to gain control over Libya’s capital.

Elmer Cato, Philippine Charge d’affaires to Libya, said the Filipino worker is “lucky” because his injuries are minor, the shrapnel hit his right foot. A Sudanese co-worker of the Filipino died from that mortar attack.

“What happened to our kababayan in Qasr bin Gashir earlier in the morning underscores the danger that all of us face here in Tripoli,” Cato wrote in his Facebook account.

Enrique Guiao, a coworker of the wounded Filipino went to the Philippine Embassy and requested to be repatriated.

A few days ago, a hospital in the same town in Qasr bin Ghashir was also hit by mortar rounds. Eighteen Filipinos are working in that hospital.

Six other Filipinos were also trapped in intense fighting in Ain Zara, another town west of Tripoli.

Still only 40 out of 1,000 Filipinos were evacuated or have requested for voluntary evacuation.

“Some of us may not be lucky the next time rockets or mortars rain in on Tripoli,” Cato said.
