Rescue ops in earthquake-hit supermarket stopped due to strong aftershock

Search and rescue operations at a supermarket in the earthquake-hit town of Porac, Pampanga were temporarily suspended early Wednesday morning due to strong aftershocks.

The aftershocks that hit were from a magnitude 4.5 quake that struck off neighboring Castillejos town in Zambales before dawn on Wednesday.

Porac Mayor Condralito Dela Cruz said that the rescue workers have clawed through rubble and debris but was forced to suspend rescue operations, saying that the aftershocks could endanger the more lives.

The mayor also said that hopes to recover more survivors become dimmer as time passes, noting that cries for help coming from the supermarket rubble have stopped.

However, it is still unclear how many were inside the supermarket with the earthquake hit.

As of April 24, at least 16 people killed in Pampanga, 5 of whom were from the supermarket.
