As Filipinos travelled to different out-of-town destinations during the Holy Week break, the Philippine National Police said that there have been 56 people who died in drowning incidents and road accidents during the holidays.
PNP chief General Oscar Albayalde said in a statement that 45 people died in drowning incidents while 8 others got killed in road accidents, reported ABS-CBN.
Albayalde added that 128 others were injured in 88 separate accidents.
The PNP chief also said that the number of deaths during the long weekend shows that Filipinos need to be more aware of safety precautions when driving.
There is also a need to review road engineering features, and include swimming skills as part of the physical education curriculum in schools, said Albayalde.
Nevertheless, Albayalde said that, despite the number of fatalities, the observance and celebration of the recently concluded Holy Week was “generally peaceful, without any significant untoward incident in the magnitude of a national emergency.”
