A charity group in Sharjah has spent a total of Dh55,000 to pay for the tickets of some 72 prisoners at the Sharjah Punitive Rehabilitation Centre, allowing the rehabilitated individuals to go back to their home countries.
The Sharjah Charity Association said that the initiative was part of the humanitarian efforts in line with the policies adopted by the Ministry of the Interior in ensuring and taking care of the need of inmates after serving their sentence.
The move is also in line with the international laws related to human rights, said Abdullah Sultan Bin Khadem, member of the board of directors and executive director of the Sharjah Charity Association.
Most of the deported individuals violated the residency law of the United Arab Emirates.
Brigadier Ahmad Shuhail, Director-General of Sharjah Punitive and Rehabilitation Establishments, lauded the charity group for the gesture, saying that the move reflects the center’s goals in achieving its mission in the reform and rehabilitation of inmates, especially those who can not afford the travel expenses upon deportation.
Ahmad said that they always welcome help from partner agencies and charity groups in enabling convicted persons to settle their cases and facilitate their return to their countries.
