LOOK: Saudi, China, Italy pavilions in Expo 2020

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, China, and Italy gave a glimpse of what their pavilions would look like for the Expo 2020 Dubai.

Saudi Arabia will be the second biggest pavilion, next to that of UAE pavilion, covering an area of two football pitches.

The facade reflects its vision to be a large window into the future, deeply rooted to its long heritage and yet soaring into the sky. A path will lead to exhibition displays that embraces openness to businesses and tourists.

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s pavilion at Expo 2020 will offer visitors a chance to experience the country’s rich heritage and culture, while demonstrating how our region is working together to create a better future for everyone,” Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General of Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau, said.

Like Saudi’s pavilion, China’s pavilion for the Expo 2020 Dubai will be one of the largest at 4,636 square meters.

The pavilion’s design will showcase China’s culture and history interspersed with innovation and modern technology. It will highlight its ‘Belt and Road’ initiative and boast of its achievements in science and information communication.

UAE is set to play a big role in China’s One Belt and One Road Project that aims to build on ancient trade routes from China through central Asia by rail and to Africa and beyond by sea.

Italy’s pavilion, on one hand, would have three ships overturned and raised sideways on tall pillars.

It draws inspiration ocean-going population and fishermen from Europe and the world. It will span 3,500 sq. m. and will be 25 meters high.

Three hulls of the ships will be painted with Italian flag colors— and would look like three petals when seen from above.

“There will be a ‘prologue’ with large spaces inspired by the forms of important Italian piazze, and a ‘grand finale’ that will be almost like a cathedral to nature, light, [and] the music of the universe, like the sky over the Mediterranean and the desert,” Italo Rota, founding partner of Italo Rota Building Office said.

Expo 2020 Dubai will run from 20 October, 2020 to 10 April, 2021 and expects to record 25 million visits, with 70 percent of visitors projected to come from outside the UAE – the highest proportion of international visitors in the 168-year history of World Expos.

A total of 190 nations have confirmed their participation in Expo 2020, highlighting the status of the UAE as a global destination that brings people and countries together.
