Spratlys is ours: China sends fleet of fishing boats to disputed islands

The Chinese government insists that they have all the right in the disputed Kalayaan Group of Islands, which includes Pag-asa island.

In a statement, Chinese Foreign Minister Lu Kang said that they acknowledge the statements made by Philippine officials like Presidential Spokesperson Sal Panelo and Foreign Affairs Secretary Teddy Boy Locsin.

China says Spratlys, which China calls Nansha Islands are within its territory. He adds they have sufficient historical and legal basis to claim the group of islands.

The Chinese official claims that their fishermen have been in the area and their rights should not be challenged.

Panelo said that Chinese fishermen should not do anything to provoke any acts that would put peace and stability at risk.

Locsin says he is not afraid to go into a ‘war’ with China. In a tweet he said “The stand is that it is ours. And they took it. World’s highest court ruled that. Period. Now the question is how to take it back. I personally have no fear of war,”.

The military confirms that at least 275 Chinese vessels have been circling near Pag-asa island.

Both governments, however, agree that the South China Sea dispute should be resolved peacefully.
