Pinoy barbers stop use of PH flag as barber cape following online backlash

An association of Filipino barbers in the U.S. is now on the hot seat for using the Philippine flag as barber capes as part of the celebration of Golden State Warriors’ Filipino Heritage night in Oakland, California’s Oracle Arena on March 10.

Jayr Mallari of the National Filipino Barbers Association (NFBA) has already issued an apology in behalf of the group, adding that it was the group’s way of showing their passion under #PinoyPride.

“Our intention was to use our platform to express pride in and raise awareness of our heritage by highlighting our flag design. It was not our intent to offend or inadvertently disrespect any of our fellow Filipinos or our country in any way,” he said in his Facebook post.

The NFBA provided free haircuts during the event.

Facebook users were offended with the use of the Philippine flag as barber cape, saying that the national colors should be treated with respect as it represents the country’s sovereignty and solidarity.

Some social media users have a calmer approach on the situation and just reminded the group over the Heraldic Code of the Philippines, which prohibits the misuse of the flag.
