The Dubai Foundation for Women and Children ((DFWAC) facilitated 27 cases of domestic violence against women last year of which most involved mixed marriages.
This, according to Ghanima Al Bahri, DFWAC care and rehabilitation director, who explained that this was so because oftentimes the women did know much about local laws.
She said there were also cases where the victims eventually found out upon seeking help that the marriage was faked, as false documents were used.
Overall, there were 526 cases of domestic violence last year, a figure that included child abuse, she said at a press conference held today at the ongoing 16th Dubai International Humanitarian Aid & Development (DIHAD) conference and exhibition being held at Dubai World Trade Center.
The DFWAC was formed in 2007 by virtue of a decree signed by HH Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid.
More of this in the next hours. Stay tuned.
