New Abu Dhabi radars detect jaywalkers

Residents in Abu Dhabi would need to be more cautious in terms of traffic rules as new radars that can detect jaywalkers and drivers who don’t stop at pedestrian crossings will be installed on several roads soon.

Major-General Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri, director of the Central Operations Sector at the Abu Dhabi Police, said that the new radars called “Hather”, which aims to reduce traffic casualties and limit violations, will be installed and will start operating within the year, reported Khaleej Times.

It will be equipped with two cameras, one for the vehicles who will pass by the zebra lines, and another one for pedestrians to detect jaywalkers.

The camera pointed at the vehicles will monitor car plates, while the other camera for the pedestrians will be for the visual recognition of people.

Back in 2017, the Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate said that around 50,595 pedestrians were caught in the Capital for crossing roads inappropriately.

A fine of Dh400 will be slapped among offenders and the directorate has advised pedestrians to use underpasses, bridges and zebra lines to avoid the getting fined.

Meanwhile, a driver will have to pay a fine of Dh500 and get six black points on his traffic file for failure to respect pedestrians’ right of way.
