Two Filipino fishermen rescued after suffering from abuse

Two maltreated Filipino fishermen who escaped their vessel were brought home after being rescued by the Vietnamese Navy in the West Philippine Sea.

The Filipino fishermen, identified as 34-year old Reynante Mandarcos and 30-year old Conrigal Mandarcos, said that they jumped off their vessel to escape abuse from other seafarers and swam to the nearest island, reported GMA News.

The Vietnamese Navy were able to rescue the fishermen and transported them to Parola Island, a Filipino-occupied island in the West Philippine Sea before they were taken in custody of the Philippine Navy.

The fishermen received medical examination and assessment before they were brought home to their hometown in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro.

Earlier, a Filipino seafarer was killed in after a brawl broke out at a Taiwanese fishing vessel in the Indian Ocean.

According to the Taiwan fisheries department, the brawl started when the fishing vessel’s chief officer “hacked two of his crew to death in a disciplinary action dispute”.

Taiwan is noted for being one of the world’s biggest tuna fishing fleets in the world. However, environmental group Greenpeace reported that the country also holds a poor record for its treatment of workers, including those from the Philippines and Indonesia.
