Sara Duterte on Alvarez’ possible return as House speaker: “‘Wag na siguro”

Presidential daughter and Davao City mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Thursday, February 28, expressed her opinion on the possibility of ousted House speaker Pantaleon Alvarez regaining his position for the 18th Congress saying those proven to be “unsuccessful” in their former positions should not be re-elected.

“‘Yung nasubukan na tapos hindi naman naging successful, siguro… wag na siguro,” Duterte-Carpio told reporters in Pateros.

Duterte-Carpio said that the shortlist for the House speaker candidates must be trimmed down adding that the list should only include the “best of the best”.

“Maraming interested siguro gawin nilang best of the best lang yung shortlist,” Duterte-Carpio said.

Despite this, Duterte-Carpio said that she said she is only a mere “bystander” in the Congress.

“Sa Congress naman bystander lang ako, I am mayor of Davao City I am not interested sa kung ano ‘yung nangyayari sa Kongreso,” she said.

Earlier, President Rodrigo Duterte admitted that it was the Davao City mayor who “maneuvered” the ouster of Alvarez who was replaced by former president and Pampanga representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo minutes before the third State of the Nation Address (SONA) in July 2018.

“Be careful of that woman: She can oust even a Speaker. She operated in Davao,” Duterte said in a speech in October 2018.

“This is a woman. She operated in Davao as mayor, look at what happened in Congress. (Alvarez) got removed,” the president added.
