Filipino student drowns in Australia

A Filipino student died after drowning in a beach in Australia, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported on Thursday, February 28.

Philippine Ambassador to Australia Ma. Hellen B. De La Vega said authorities in Queensland informed the Philippine Embassy in Canberra of the death of the 24-year-old Filipino student from Queensford College in Brisbane on Monday, 25 February.

De La Vega said that the Embassy was told the victim drowned off Flinders Beach in North Stradbroke Island.

Following the Filipino’s death, the Office of Migrant Workers Affairs contacted the family of the victim who have requested the government’s assistance in the repatriation of his remains.

This is the fifth drowning incident abroad involving Filipinos since the start of the year.

Two Filipinos earlier drowned in separate incidents in New Zealand while an OFW couple also drowned while on their honeymoon in the Maldives.
