Dubai hosts car-free day today

Dubai Municipality is urging motorists to refrain from using their cars today, February 24, and use public modes of transportation instead as part of the 10th edition of UAE Car Free Day.

Residents are encouraged to walk, use bicycles, or take public transportation in order to help lessen carbon emissions and reduce traffic congestions.

“Not just a day, every day. Be part of this event. Stay tuned,” Dubai Municipality said in a previous tweet regarding the said event.

During the celebration of Car-Free Day in 2018, Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality said that Car-Free Day seeks to raise Dubai’s profile among the world’s eco-friendly cities by finding all sustainable and effective solutions to meet the various environmental challenges.

Last year, over 60,000 residents participated in the Car-Free Day event.

Dubai Municipality launched the environmental programme in 2010, which was a first of its kind in the region, and aimed at achieving leadership in various fields, including environmental work. Later, the initiative witnessed great development, especially with the size of the participants from various governmental and non-governmental sectors.

The campaign will contribute in achieving the objectives of UAE National Agenda 2021 in preserving air quality and reducing carbon footprints.

Each vehicle, with a full tank fuel size of 15 gallons, emits nearly 140 kilograms of carbon dioxide into the air, bringing the annual emissions to four tons, and contributing towards global warming.
