Win smartwatch by not using your car on Feb. 24

A government initiative in Dubai will not only push residents to help the environment by not using their vehicles on Sunday, February 24, but it would also give them a chance to bring home a new smartwatch.

In a tweet, the Dubai Municipality urged the emirate’s residents to participate in the government’s initiative, Car-Free Day, happening on February 24.

Residents are also encouraged to submit photos of them participating in the event by showing creative ways they travel the emirate without using private cars.

Those with the most creative photos will win a brand new smartwatch courtesy of the Dubai Municipality.

“Show us your creative way of moving around without your car, be a part of UAE Car Free Day. Share your picture on Instagram & Facebook, tag us & use our hashtag for a chance to win a smartwatch,” the municipality’s tweet read.

During the celebration of Car-Free Day in 2018, Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality said that Car-Free Day seeks to raise Dubai’s profile among the world’s eco-friendly cities by finding all sustainable and effective solutions to meet the various environmental challenges.

Among these problems, Lootah said, are air pollution and the increase in the carbon footprint resulting from vehicle emissions.

“Dubai is already the first city in the world to achieve a sustainable clean environment through its environmental and health initiatives,” said Lootah.

“Each vehicle, with a full tank fuel size of 15 gallons, emits nearly 140 kilograms of carbon dioxide into the air, taking the annual emissions to four tons, contributing towards global warming. The campaign will contribute in achieving our objectives of UAE National Agenda 2021 in preserving air quality and reducing carbon footprint,” he added.

Other municipalities such as Ajman, Al Ain and Ras Al Khaimah also joined the initiative in 2018.
