Lawmaker in Slovenia quits over sandwich he stole

DUBAI: A Slovenian lawmaker made international news lately for walking out of a supermarket with a sandwich he did not pay for because, he said, the store’s staff kept ignoring him.

Darij Krajcic, a member of parliament for the Marjan Sarec List (LMS) party — the senior partner in the ruling coalition — said he walked off without paying because three supermarket employees had “treated (him) like air” and continued chatting, according to news reports from the wires, among them Agence France Presse (AFP).

“I must have stood some three minutes by the counter,” AFP quoted Krajcic as telling American basic cable and satellite television network, POP TV.

Krajcic insisted that he returned shortly afterwards to pay for the sandwich. But he apologized and resigned from parliament, said the news reports.

According to British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC), the theft went unnoticed but the ruling Marjan Sarec List (LMS) party member insisted that the lawmaker later returned to pay.

Mr Krajcic has apologized, saying he regretted his “social experiment,” said the BBC report.

His initial admission became public when he shared the anecdote with parliamentary colleagues in a committee meeting

Three supermarket employees reportedly failed to notice him as they talked among themselves, resulting in the former professor to test their attention.

“Nobody came after me, nobody yelled,” Krajcic was quoted as saying.
