Couple nabbed for selling one-week old baby for Php40,000

A one-week old baby in Las Piñas City was rescued from a couple who was about to sell the newborn for cash.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) International Operations Division and City Social Welfare and Development – Las Piñas arrested the couple who introduced themselves as the parents of the newborn, reported GMA News.

The authorities, however, questioned if they are the biological parents of the baby, after information that the couple is a part of a syndicate group following the discovery of a Facebook page which actively sells babies for as low as Php10,000.

The rescued newborn, meanwhile, was supposed to be sold for Php40,000.

“Mapapansin natin dito sa account niya, ‘yun pong mga nagpapasalamat sa kanya dahil nagkaroon sila ng anak. Napaka-active nung page niya at napakaraming allegedly bumibili sa kanya ng bata,” Ronald Aguto, the NBI’s cybercrime division chief, said.

Despite this, the couple insisted that they are the real parents of the child and admitted they had planned to sell the baby since the discovery of the pregnancy.

They were arrested along with two others who acted as agents in the sale.

The suspects will face charges for violating the expanded human trafficking law and adoption act.
