The Ras Al Khaimah Customs Department was able to seize smugglers who tried to illegally bring 12 endangered birds into the UAE by stuffing them in a spare tire.

As seen in an Instagram photo uploaded by the RAK Customs, the 12 Houbara bustards were tied inside sacks with holes to allow them to breathe. The sacked where placed inside a hollow spare tire.

Authorities were able to catch the smugglers when their vehicle passed through Al Darah checkpoint.

The fowl smuggle attempt is a violation of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Wildscreen Arkive describes houbara bustard as a “striking bird resembling a turkey in shape”.

“It is a slender bird, with a tuft of hairs in the centre of the crown, and long plumes of feathers drooping over the neck, the uppermost feathers being black while the lower ones are white with black tips. The body is pale sandy-buff in colour, with darker brown lines and mottling, while the underside is white,” the same source reads.
