OFWs in the UAE climb a mountain to raise cancer awareness

DUBAI: Some 110 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), a number of whom brought their young ones with them, held a climb-for-a-cause event on Jan. 25 dubbed, Fight and Survive, Beat Cancer – 3.

The event was held at Wadi Ghalilah, Jebel Jais, Ras Al Khaimah. Participants were representatives from the UAE Mountainbiking Jumeirah, Filipino Mountaineers Federation and Firebase Alpha.

The climb was organized by Filipino Outdoor Xplorer (FOX.AE) Ninety of the participants did the actual trekking and climb; the remaining 20 did some activities at camp base.

Participants arrived in the evening of Jan.24 at around 10pm onwards at the Wadi Ghalilah Dam for night bonding and late dinner.

The trails and terrain were mostly cliffs and wadis, partly steep, but easy. The big group started their accent at around 8:30 am and reached the 1,500 meter summit at 4:30pm which was some 7,500 meters away from camp base, organizers said.

Descend started at 5pm. Base camp arrival 11:00pm.

Out of 90, only 53 climbers reached the summit; the others decided to bail out and turn back just halfway through.
