Filipino workers, other expats win labor case vs. catering company in Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) decided in favor of nearly 400 workers, including Filipinos, who filed a complaint against a catering company that failed to pay their wages for more than five months.

According ADJD, the Al Wasita Emirates Catering Services owes its employees Dh3 million in salary.

To settle the unpaid dues, the judicial department decided to liquidate the employer’s bank guarantee, reported Khaleej Times.

The workers were hired as chefs, drivers, cleaners, and maintenance staff, among others, however, several officials of the company left the UAE due to misappropriation of funds.

With the help of the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), other concerns raised including insufficient food allowance, residence issues, and repatriation were also addressed.

“Necessary measures have also been taken to transfer the willing workers’ residences under other companies and to provide travel tickets for those wishing to return home,” said the judicial department.

Earlier, the workers complained that they have not received their salaries for more than five months and that the power and water supply in their accommodation have been cut.

The workers added that they have also been eating discarded food from supermarkets.
