Japan in need of 345,000 foreign workers

Japan will be hiring around 345,000 foreign workers to cover the country’s labor shortage in 14 different industries.

It will be needing workers for the following sectors:
1. Nursing and healthcare
2. Foodservice industry
3. Construction
4. Agriculture
5. Manufacture of food and beverages
6. Accommodation industry
7. Building cleaning management
8. Machine parts and tooling
9. Industrial machinery
10. Fishery and aquaculture
11. Electric, electronics and information
12. Aviation industry
13. Automobile repair and maintenance
14. Shipbuilding and ship machinery

According to the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, the Philippine and Japanese governments met to discuss the specified skilled worker visa, which will be introduced in the eastern Asia country.

Under the new system, workers are categorized into two depending on their skills and line of work:
Workers can be given a five-year contract;
Workers can be issued a contract valid for more than five years allowing them to bring their family to the country and apply for an immigrant visa

Workers are required to pass a language proficiency exam and a skills test.

Japan expects 47,550 foreign workers to enter the country in the first year of implementation of the new system and 345,150 workers in the next five years. The bill is expected to be implemented in April 2019.
