DFA issues travel warning amid protests in France

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Wednesday, December 5, issued an advisory for Filipinos travelling and staying to France as violent protests continue in the country.

“Filipinos in France, as well as those in the Philippines who are traveling to Paris, are advised to exercise caution in view of the violent protests that have been taking place in the French capital and other areas during the past several weekends,” the travel notice said.

DFA also called for Filipinos in France not to participate in the rallies to avoid possible danger.

“Filipinos should also not participate in the protests against the imposition of environmental tax on fuel and rising gas prices,” the advisory said. “The Embassy is closely monitoring the situation.”

Those who need the help of the Philippine Embassy are advised to contact +33620592515.

The protests, which have been labelled as “Yellow Jacket” riots, has been ongoing for more than three weeks and have resulted in 1000 people injured and more than 400 arrested.

On December 2 alone, more than 133 people were injured and almost 412 people were arrested as protesters simultaneously lighted fires, up-turned vehicles and vandalized properties in Central Paris.

Protesters were also singing France’s National Anthem, La Marseillaise and ‘Macron resign!’ in the Parisian’s ardent opposition to the country’s rising gas prices which torpedoed a spike in prices of commodities.

Police responded with tear gas and water canons after being targeted by protesters in the mayhem.
