Sun-powered bus shelters to be tested in Dubai

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Monday, December 3, announced that they will be testing two shelters powered by solar energy in Dubai.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said that the transport authority is currently constructing models for two bus shelters that are powered by the sun. Once completed, the bus shelters will be put under testing phase.

If successful, Al Tayer said that the bus shelters will be beneficial especially for areas not reached by the electric power grid.

Through solar power, bus shelter features including lights, air-conditioners and billboards, will be fully operational.

“The Air-Conditioned Bus Shelters Project is part of RTA’s continuous effort to enhance excellence and leadership drive through undertaking flagship projects in Dubai. It is also part of a master plan for improving public transport, and providing smooth services to bus riders, especially during the blazing summer,” Al Tayer said.

Aside from the solar-powered bus shelters, Al Tayer also announced that the RTA is currently constructing 48 new air-conditioned bus shelters across Dubai.

Al Tayer said that the air-conditioned bus shelters are located at Dubai Investment Park, Dubai Academic City – Aviation College, Higher Colleges of Technology, Dubai Industrial City, Dubai Internet City, and JLT.

Currently, 1.2 million people current use bus shelters every month.
