OFWs in UAE sent home Dh5.5 billion in first 9 months of 2018

Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the UAE have sent home more than Dh5.5 billion or P78.6 billion from January to September 2018, latest data showed.

With the number, UAE becomes the second highest source of remittances from OFWs in the Gulf region, according to a report of Gulf News.

The report cited estimates from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) showing that OFWs in the UAE have sent more money to the Philippines compared to Filipinos in other Gulf states such as Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman.

Saudi Arabia remains as the top source of OFW remittances in the Middle East from January to September this year at $1.6 billion, slightly higher than remittances from the UAE.

Aside from the Middle East, there are also remittances from OFWs in other countries in Asia and the United States.

OFW remittances for the month of September brought the total $21.294 billion – 16.8 billion from land-based workers and $4.5 billion from sea-based workers–in 2018.
