IKEA’s first PH store will be as big as 150 basketball courts

Swedish-founded furniture giant IKEA announced that it will be opening its first store in the Philippines, which will also be its largest outlet in the world, in 2020.

In a statement, IKEA said that the store will occupy 65,000 square meters, equivalent to the size of 150 basketball courts, and will be located at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. There will be a two-level shopping area as well as warehouse, e-commerce facility, and integrated call center.

More than 9,000 “well-designed, functional home furnishing” items will be sold in the physical store. A supervised playroom will also be set up for children so that their parents could roam around the store to pick their needs.

In terms of price, IKEA market development manager Georg Platzer earlier said the price of the items will be “so low that as many people as possible can afford them.”

A restaurant will also be built inside the store offering customers Swedish meatballs, among others.

The opening of the store is also expected to create job opportunities for Filipinos as the company seeks to hire 500 workers with more hiring expected as years go on.

The Philippine store’s website was also launched today, November 20. IKEA will offer e-commerce delivery for their customers in the Greater Manila Area.

“Come 2020, we will open an IKEA store to give millions of Filipinos easy access to a wide range of well-designed, functional home furnishing products at prices so low almost everyone will be able to afford them,” IKEA said in its website.
